Boss from hell

My fiance and I had recently lost a baby before I started a new job. It was devastating, particularly because the day I found out I was actually pregnant, in the next breath the Dr. was explaining the baby was in my fallopian tube and I was bleeding to death internally, as they are rushing me to surgery.

We waited a while and then decided we really wanted a baby so we worked on getting pregnant. We both had really good jobs, I had just started a new job I loved and would be there just over a year by the time the baby was due. Everything was going great.

Then our HR manager announced she was pregnant. Fabulous! Her baby was due just a few weeks after mine. She had waited to tell anyone because she had a history of miscarriages and wanted to be sure she was far enough along that it was more likely she'd carry to term.

My immediate boss had started to become a prick about this time. He and his wife and been unsuccessful becoming pregnant and they were jealous that here I was, having a baby, and I wasn't even married yet. Like there's some rule about being a member of their religion and doing things their way before you can have a baby.

The baby put a lot of pressure on my insides and I would often take a deep breath to get more air. It would sound like I was sighing. So then he decided I was being disrespectful when I did that. Oh?

About two months before my baby was due, the HR manager had a miscarriage. My boss called me in to the office and told me that it wasn't right an "unwed mother" was having a baby when a nice christian lady who'd been married so long had just lost a baby. (My fiance and I had been living together longer than that lady had been married.) He ordered me to have an abortion or lose my job. Bear in mind, I was about 7 months pregnant at this time. I got up and walked out. I ended up on bedrest having preterm labor because of the stress. I almost lost the baby anyway.

After the baby was born and I had gone through the maternity leave I was allowed, I went back to work. My boss demoted me to "secretary" and took away all my clients. I ended up only typing correspondence and managing a database, which I had previously built to track MY clients but he claimed as his and used for all the clients (which was a good thing for the business actually). Fortunately I didn't get a cut in pay because the HR manager controlled that.

Then he started calling me in to his office and shutting the door to berate me over stupid little things, like not putting staples in his stapler. Had no clue that was in my job description. I complained to the HR manager. I had already told her and the owner about the abortion thing and they were appalled. There was no way this man was gonna be allowed to fire me.

I finally had all I could take and went to the HR manager and put in my 2 weeks notice. I explained how I was tired of him screaming at me. She tried to talk me out of it. She didn't agree with my boss's assertion that it wasn't fair I had a baby when she lost hers. I agreed to a meeting with her and my boss to work things out. Less than 10 minutes into the meeting my boss stands up, slams his fists on the table and is screaming at me so loud the guys in the shop upstairs could hear him over the equipment running. I just looked at the HR manager, said, "See?" Got up and walked out, for the last time.

The owner of the company gave me a HUGE severance package and paid me for vacation time I hadn't earned but he said I deserved. He also wrote me a glowing reference letter and I had a new, higher paying, job by the end of the week.

And my boss? Fired. Karma!

A prick indeed! Happy to hear HR and the owner saw thru it all and did the right thing. Sorry you had to endure that – but you’ve learned a thing about some people. Cheers!

Woah. That is something off of a daytime soap.

“He ordered me to have an abortion or lose my job”. If it was true, you could go to upper management and he would immediately be fired or a big lawsuit would happen.

I hope you become his boss some day

When ur boss asked u to abort ur baby u should have complained to sr. management and threatened to take ur boss to court for harrassment. You should have made life difficult for him instead of getting stressed out. But all’s well that ends well.. :) congrats on ur new job!

Gads, what you went through. What a prick!

Posted on September 7, 2006

You should’ve sued the guy. You’d definitely be a lot richer now ;-)

I agree. Sue him, if it’s not too late. I am so glad your story had a happy ending!

You deserve a year+ severance package working for that a-hole. Ordering you to have an abortion? How ridiculous and insane.
